Lights at the Detroit Zoo

A great thing that everyone should experience in November is the Detroit Zoo. There are many exotic animals to see and learn about with several buildings dedicated to reptiles, birds, and even a butterfly house. My personal favorite that I always take time to see are the grey wolves, located right beside the kangaroo pathway where you get to walk along a path with kangaroos all around with no barriers between you. The reptile room is something that no one should sleep on. I often challenge myself to find each of the reptiles as they like to hide and can be hard to find. Of course, you can’t go to the zoo without stopping by the Polk Penguin Conservation Center. It’s a massive building dedicated to housing several different penguin species for conservation and educational purposes. Finally, the main reason to go in the winter, starting in late November, the Detroit Zoo begins its annual “Zoo Lights” event. This is where the zoo stays open late, well into the dark hours of the winter evenings, and turns on Christmas lights that are a wonderous sight to see. Even the accompanying pictures don’t truly do it justice, everyone should try to experience this at least once in their life, but personally I go every year. Happy Holidays!
